  • z34 Tranny problem diagnosis

My tranny seems to be slipping in overdrive when I go up hills. I went through the gears and 1, 2nd are fine and when in Drive it doesn't slip but when in overdrive it feels like it is slipping but it is not constantly slipping, just when going up hill. What is going on? Is the tranny about to go or is it something in the electronics?

Sorry I didn't give to many details. After the car started it I got the fluid, filter and seal changed and it still does it. The car seems to miss/surge when I am going up a hill at about 2000 rpm. If i watch the tach I can see the needle move up and down slightly. If i let off the gas and then get back on it usually goes away.

I would still check the fluid because the shop that changed it might not have filled it all the way back up. It's not very common, but I'm sure it has happened.

Ok how do you properly check the fluid. I have checked it before i got it changed and it was low so I added a half a quart and the line was still in the same spot.

Also is the auto tranny in the z34 hard to come by? And is it a pain to pull out like working on everything else on this car?

The 91 did that after I put Lucas Tranny Fix in it. Yeah, it fixed it alright, fixed its fate. Half the time it wouldn't go into lockup, half the time it would. Then half the time it would go into lockup, it would slip. Diagnosis (mine, not a shops) the soleniod that controls lockup was sticking.

Well I checked the fluid and it was at the lower line so I went and got some fluid and put 3/4 of a quart in it and checked it again but I can't tell how much is in it I can't seem to get a reading. I took it for a short drive and it didn't seem to slip but I don't know if it is gone beucase I didn't drive very far. I also found that one of my spark plug caps wasn't on all the way this is the second time that I found it that way I don't know whats up wih that.

Make sure you check the fluid with the car running, in park, and warmed up all on a flat surface.

next time you change the fluid go from Dextron III to ford type F fluid, the only difference between the two is there's more friction modifiers in the dex 3 which allow the clutches to slip more. I've been running type F in my 88 regal for 2 years now, 2.8 4-speed auto and 75 shot of N2O no problems with the trans yet.
