  • 91-5 on OBD2?

Is it possible to run a 3.4 from 91-95 on OBD2? What all is needed to make it happen? TH 96 I was rebuilding has a destroyed cylinder (#3) at the bottom side, below where the pistons had been resting.. SO I didn't see it until today. What it almost looks like is someone tossed something in there while it was running and just let it go.. It LOOKS like boring it out would help except in two spots on one side of the wall where it neighbors another cylinder (I forgot which one). If I bore it back smooth, I'll wind up INSIDE that other cylinder.

I just threw the tools back in the boxes, locked the garage, and washed my hands. It's cool though. I am gonna start scoping a strong running 3.4 I can toss in the car to help this project progress forward. Thanks for your patience everyone.. I am going to go kick myself for being so stupid..

    it is possible.

but depends on a few things. are you going to change anything or just drop it in?

the easiest solution would be to put 96-97 heads and intake on a 94-95 engine and everything will hook up no sweat.

if you want to use a 94-95 engine with the same heads and intake, it is a little more involved. your going to have to adapt the egr, and mount a 96-97
MAP sensor somewhere. just off the top of my head id say you'd have to get a set of 91-93 5 spd manifolds with the EVAP and hook them up to your 96-97 EVAP.

for a 91-93 engine, it is a PITA. it is everything above plus you have to use a 94-97 cams as the 91-93 cams do not have a cam sensor. your going to have to also switch the large front cover b/c it has the mounting holes for the crank sensor and your crank damper b/c it has the reluctor ring you'll need.

Sweet, thank you Rotating Mass Nazi!

..I have everything from the 96 LQ1. Heads, Cams, carriers, even the covers, cogs, etc.. I am getting a 92 LQ1 from a wrecked Lumina soon, and I had intended to use th better heads and intakes anyway.. Plus I can do all the gaskets down there which like to go bad.. AND the Oil pump drive seal FTW!

steve, the big difference is the cam sensor(nonexistant on 91-93) and the front cover w/ matching balancer to mount/read the 24x crank sensor. the rest is trivial external nonsense(MAF, rear O2, EGR, AIR)and doesnt require replacing a ton of stuff.

since you've got the 96 parts motor and want to do the heads anyway, you'll have it all off so just tear down to the 92 shortblock and reassemble with the 96 parts.

delete the EGR, rear O2 sensor, and AIR from the ecm and never look back...

Software tuning recommendations? WHere can I get the cable to interface with the ECM when I get it all wired up? Because I need to 'delete' electronic shifting..

im really interested in this, too. i have a powrtuner for a 96 gtp, so i wont have any problems shutting stuff off, but i still need to worry about getting the other things to work, too and im not sure how you would trick the maf-related tables. everything on this motor will be 96 except the cams and intakes. here's a good post about 1.5 to 2 wiring: http://www.60degreev6.com/showthread.php?t=36113

Well, I don't need to worry about swapping wires or things for the c100. I am swapping in a complete WBody dash harness.. If all goes right, I'll have a 96 Cutlass Supreme dash harness.. Then I'll grab a Monte Z34 engine harness or other WBody OBD2/LQ1 combo.

OIC. well, i dont have that luxury

its either obd2 swap and use my powrtuner or $450 for a custom dyno-tuned chip
