  • LQ1 Mated to Getrag M282, reving question

Ok I'm almost completely done with my Fiero swap(!!!) and I've been wondering something. I'm still using the stock computer (95 computer and engine : Monte Carlo)

The Rev limiter... theoretically will still be in place, and there's no way to tell the computer that the car is out of park. So if it thinks the car is in park (or isn't moving) will it still limit the rev? Or was the switch that limits the computer on the auto tranny? VSS is hooked into the computer as is everything that wasn't included with the auto.

    Thanks

I can change that in the ECM for you (the limiter). Brian89GP had a 5 speed DOHC using that ECM and had problems with it knowing about the gearing or something. He was boosted so I dunno if that was part of the issue or not. He doesn't post anymore. I have his code but I dunno how useful that is for you.

with the switch unplugged, my car thought it was in park all the time - trying to bypass a bad park/neutral switch. so could not get over 4k even in gear. i would guess you will encounter this but not 100% sure either way

Ryan at GmTuners is going to tune the chip later, so I'm not leaving it this way for long, but I need to be driving the car for a while before that. Can I ground the park/nuetral wire into the Ecm to trick the ECM?

The 94-95 does not use a park/neutral switch but instead a transmission range switch that will tell the PCM the exact gear. It is a rather large obvious plug that normally goes where the shift cable attaches to the auto tranny. You can fool it into thinking it is in gear all the time by crossing the proper wires (you will have to reference a wiring diagram for this). With the plug unhooked it thinks it is in park or neutral or something like that. I would choose to hard wire it into OD as some features are normally disabled in the lower gears.

I never did try the 94-95 wiring with the 5spd tranny but theoretically it should work just fine.

The way the transmission tells the computer what gear it's in is by having a combination of switches grounded or open. There should be 6 or 7 wires going into the plug for the controller, and having a certain combination going to ground will make the computer think you're in a certain gear. On mine I ground 3 of the 6 wires and by doing that for the first 30 seconds the computer thinks it's in park but it drives fine, then after 30 seconds it gives up and thinks it's always in 3rd. Purple and yellow obviously don't count because they signal the starter, but the others relay signals of what gear it's in.
I may own a GTO now, but I'm still a 60V6er at heart.
