  • 91 Z34 just quits

Hey guys I have a 1991 Lumina Z34. I was going to walmart tonight and as I was pulling in the car just quit. Tried to start it and al it did was turn over. So I went into walmart for about 30min. Came back out and it cranked right up. Drove about a mile and quit again.Let it sit and sit, about a hour later, it started but I just let it run. Everything sounded normal but about 3-5 minutes later it quit again. Now during this time, I tried to crank it with and without the gas to the floor. During that time, you can smell fuel pretty bad.

Anybody know what the problem could be. Hopefully its something I can do myselfl

    Thanks

Either a ground or something, or your fuel pump is screwed up pretty good. Id say its heat related.

its sitting at a carwash and Id really like to get it home. Anything you can tell me to check tonight. I can hear the pump come on when I turn the key, but then shuts off. Assuming its reached proper pressure?

Thats normal. You would have to pull a line off the fuel rail and run the test lead to the battery and check the flow. When its cold, it probably flows very well but when it gets hot it starts to flow less. You could check your pressure cold and then after it dies. Pressure can be fine without adequate flow though.

I went back up there after a couple hours of sitting.Still wouldnt start. I looked at the oil dip stick ran my fingers on it smelled and it smelled alittle like gas. I was told you couldnt flood a fuel injection motor?

Going WOT won't make the injectors spray more. In fact, it should make it stop spraying. Have you checked for spark? How about the fuel pressure?

You will need a fuel pressure gauge. Borrow one from a friend or buy one. It probably won't be the last time you will need one.

got the car home, took the front plugs out turned it over a couple time and the cylinders have alot of fuel in them. COuld it be the fuel regulator? If so where is it located.

its probably your ignition control module, becuase if it was your crank sensor you would loose fuel too, so if you dont have spark, either all your coils are shot (not likely) or your ignition control module is toast (likely), and they can be heat related becuase my igntion conrtol module went out on me a few months ago and it would only act up when the car got hot. it wont be your pressure regulator because the injectors control the amount of fuel going into the motor.

thanks for the help...I tinkered with it all day. Took the plugs out cleaned them real good. She started right up. Smoked like a biatch though.. Let it run for awhile shut it off. Started again less smoke let run awhile again. I did the a few time during the day. checked the plugs, they were black(running rich) Cleaned again started again. Run for a bit then took it to get more gas. Still alittle smoke, but not stalling. Got home and just let it run for liek 1.5 hours. Took it for a WOT spin to get all the crap out of the cylinders.. Now it runs like nothing was ever wrong in the first place. But it does(always has) run alittle rich. Maybe had some crap in the fuel?

there not bad, just pull off the weatherstrip at the back, and cut 3 indents in the metal there and bam you can change the plugs in 5 min.
