  • 3100 or 3400

Im trying to decide on wat engine to rebuild for my 2001 grand prix it has the 31 in it but im trying to see will the 34 make that much more power. I also want to know wat i could do wit these engines to make more power plus im thinkin bout possibly putn a turbo on it but i dont know wat it will need. the trannies are always a weak point so i need to know wat to do wit it too. I need somthn that i can still drive but have the power wen i need it and still be fairly efficient!

You could think of it this way... Physical size wise, they are identical, but the 3.4 has a larger displacement. Personally if it were me, that would be enough to swap up to a 3400. You also have the added benefit of building the 3400 (you could do it with another 3100 as well) while you continue to drive the car. There is quite a bit you can do to each to increase power. About the only thing I know you can't do to a 3100 that you can do to a 3400 is use Camaro or DOHC pistons and put 3500 heads on it.

What year is your car? Can you please not post like its a text message on a cell? I am ok with bad spelling but not when you post wat wen somthn, etc.

If you have a 2000 or newer grand prix, then the only difference is displacement. Building a motor and swapping it in is best if you plan to do a large build, and a 3400 is a no brainer when you look at the cost. Even the 3500 LX9 with an external trigger setup is cheaper than a 3100 from car-part.com (last I looked). Its the cheapest and best overall option you have for a 2000 and newer vehicle (reusing the injectors, rail, and upper intake from the original motor). If you want to modify the motor you have now, then there is no real good reason to add the expense of a new motor, and an engine stand.

If i decide to go with the 3400 what will give me the best power and efficiency and be compatible with a turbo? What is the best solution for the weak transmissions in these cars?
