  • OBD2 Tuning

Tomorrow, I am investing a nice chunk of change on my HPTuner to do ALL GM V6s. Not only do we need a tuned setup for our parts, but a completely tuned setup by someone who cares to do more than simple be better than the competition. Pricing will be competitive, but the results will be hard to beat.

i don't see why not. they overpay for everything else anyway... might as well benefit from it.
1995 Monte Carlo LS 3100, 4T60E...for now, future plans include driving it until the wheels fall off!

Well, I'm glad someone is getting into the V6 OBDII tuning aspect. There are a bunch of guys who like to do OBDI and such but everyone is just so afraid of OBDII.

It's not so much being afraid of it as the cost. Looking at $550 for HPT and credits really sucks when OBD1 guys can pick up an ALDL cable and free software.

Its all setup I will be tuning a 3400 swapped 96 achieva using a 97 PCM once we get the motor finished up and installed. If the weather cooperates, I will be working on an 01 grand am.

$500 for HPT and 8 credits. My first goal is to put together some parts packages that include the HPTuner. It was that thought that made me realize just how important it was for me to have this V6 package from HPT. Now I can help people tune, which is the second obstacle after someone buying the tuning hardware/software. Gotta know how to use it properly.

                    And a free chip burner?

Some OBDI people try to make it sound like its 100% free to tune but that's not true.

Ben, are you starting with a 97 Monte ecm? Or something else?

97 monte? why would I start there? I guess I do have a 3.4 DOHC 5 speed tune for someone with a modified 3.4 DOHC using ported heads and 96 intake manifolds. Other than that, nope. 01 grand am is first, which will be the basis for all 3400 4T45-E setups. I will then be doing a 3400 swapped 96 achieva using a 97 grand am 3100 ECM for the 4T60-E setup.

What is the part number on the Grand AM ECM? I asked about the Monte ECM because at first that was the only OSID that I saw supported for 1997, Then again I did check a long time ago.

I was asking if they supported the 058 ECM's and I was told that they don't support a specific ECM, but only the OSID since their system is unable to overwrite an OSID. So if I were to go with HP tuners I would have had to purchase or find a 1997 Monte ECM to even have a computer that I could register and re-write.

The Grand Am I see listed now, but back when I looked as noted it was only the Monte ECM.

Thats the one and only beef I have with HP tuners... with my DHP I can pull any working 058 ECM and reflash it to my 97 Venture file and make it an OSID that I can edit... Where theirs, you need to find that specific model to pull the ECM from. Granted this only becomes an issue if you want a spare ECM or you cook the current one. I have one 97 ECM and one 96 for backup's.

Can you find out if OSID 9355440 is supported?

If so then I have a file recognized by DHP that is a 3.1 4t60e combo that I can flash to any 058 ECM that would then also be readable by HPTuners.

I have some computers here and I did reflash one that was coming up as a 2.4 for some reason (VIN was 3100). Said it programmed ok but I can't test it as its a 99 3100 malibu and I dont have one of those.

16254333 is the 97 grand am OSID. If you can upload the .bin of whatever you have, I can load it and see what it says.

If you already know how to tune OBDII,and don't need the crutches and training wheels that hptuners provides than you should look into a TCII/Roadrunner package deal.
That is currently the only way to get TCII now that JET holds the licensing. It costs around $2500 or so to get into it,but you'll never have to worry about licensing to tune a vehicle. It is one of the only real commercial tuning programs in my opinion that is available.
I use TCII and EFILive commercial depending on what i'm doing, and 98% of the time I use TCII.
You can do a quick $25 cat delete or whatever you want without the customer having a minimum $99 fee +profit.
Your customers will love you for being able to do the small jobs without the big pricetag associated with a "Tune" when all they want is something small.
I've found that once you get in there, they will start asking you to do even more anyway.

Just thought I would throw that out there, for a commercial shop that does tuning TCII is the best tool i've found.
You can pay for it with a few dyno tunes, and then everything else is gravy.
Also you don't have to deal with HPtuners attitude about what they think you should have access and not have access too.
They restrict alot of tables due to "Liability" of people messing up their cars, and will not add them when requested.
With TCII I drop a quick email with what I want/need added and I get an update back generally right away.
And customer service is top notch,John will be all over any issues you have as quick as possible.

If you haven't yet, look into it-as a business it will do nothing but help your profit margin's.
Sorry to inject my opinion, just hoping to help.
