VW has a 12 degree 30-valve V-6. slugs share a combustion chamber, so 1-2, 3-4, 5-6. When the head is off you can see the 12 degree splay, but when its on it looks like a straight 6.
sigpicHow to make High performance Emissions:
A "true" High flow converter, straight pipe.
Low/No flow EGR valve, block off plate.
Carbon canister and purge valve mod, place in large 30 Gallon can, cover, and place curbside, the city will do the rest.
PCV valve and vent tube, reroute to exhaust to dump where it belongs, on the ground. Or add breathers and let it all free.

oh and if you want to get real wierd, bugatti has a "W" motor, 3 banks of 4 cyl. your left, right, and one up the middle, W-12. Makes insane HP too!

i've heard of it before but why? and it has 5 valves per cylinder? VW does come up with weird stuff... and how do they keep the compression up?

        i'm off to wikipedia...

and i know about that W motor: powers the Buggati Veyron...

just read up on the VR6. that thing puts our V6's to shame... newer ones even more so. 3.2 liters and makes like 280HP and almost that much torque... i wouldn't want to work on it though. and apparently they have a 10.? degree version now too...

          EDIT: we're WAY off topic...

oh thank god I've never had to work on one. I've just seen it in a machine shop.

All these neat new parts for our motors....
It's still cheaper for me to build an all out 3400, than my 4.0L.

I'm saving and planning, this will be an interesting winter, but I really ain't going that final step till scorp gets done WITH THOSE DAMN ROLLER ROCKERS!!!!!!

lol, just had to throw that in.

seriously tho, I'll need the roller rockers to check with these new pistons, and the cam to see if I need to cut the pistons or not.

Anyone got a piston deck thickness measured on these yet? Don't want to cut too deep and find it's too thin. Also it'll save me cutting one in half.

              i feel the pain too...

couldn't you take a c-clamp or something similar and tighten it into the piston, mark the thread that it stops on, pull it off, adjust it to the thread, then measure the space left? seems like you would be able to find out how much material is there that way....

I mean after you make the valve notch, then measure from bottom inside of piston to bottom of your new notch.

ok. lets assume your running custom pistons, custom rods, custom crank with wierd stroke, custom cam, etc...never done before. first degree the cam in with the weak springs, etc... I'm assuming you know how to degree a cam, if not, I'll walk you through that next post. (In trade you can teach me how to tune an OBD 1! )

Since you've degree'd in the cam you know how much your maximum lift will be at what degree your crank will be. In other words, maximum possible valve to piston contact. Now you pull your test valves out, put your cutting tool in to cut the valve reliefs into the piston, and install the pistons. setting the depth on the tool to the max lift number you measured and lock the crank in on each slug at it's proper degree of upward movement. You now cut you valve relief's, but only on 1 piston. then you remove the piston, remove the rod from it, and cut the piston in half at the deepest part of the relief, and measure the thickness of the piston top, thus ensuring you didn't make it too thin. If it is too thin, throw away the pistons, draw up another set with thicker top, and wait 6 weeks for the new set....repeat, till you get it right.

I went through 4 sets of pistons and 2 rod sets till we got a 38 lb boost 2.2L ford probe to work proper, and then went through 2 more sets of each till we got it right to stay together. She pulled mid 9's.

This is really much easier to show then explain. Your likely to pull your hair out teaching me to flash comps. But, SHOW me how to, and it'll sink right in!

I'm an ASE cert Master tech, I've owned a few shops, 18+ years experience, I always seem to be the one in the shop that shines, I've learned alot from the people here, and we all seem to have our strong spots, and work really good togehter. The funny part....I still don't know what the hell a BLM is and I couldn't look at a fuel trim % and tell you if its good or not! But, I'd kill to learn how.

Well since we totally trashed Ben's thread...

There is a measuring device (yes I work in a machine shop and don't know what it's called lol), but it looks like one of those things the guys used to pick up ice blocks with when a fridge was actually a cooler. You put the points of one end in the part you want to measure, and a caliper/mic on the other end and you get your measurements that way.

neat tool, too bad someone didn't tell me about it 9 years ago, would have saved the team a few grand!

i know about degreeing cams... but i'll teach you(or anybody thats interested) what i know about tuning, but i do think we should move out of this thread before we get kicked out...

and the whole valve relief dilema: never had to cut the reliefs myself, hopefully i'll never have to, but you never know
