  • low mount alt

I am in the process of installing a 2005 3400 into my 87 fiero, I am wondering if any of you have mounted your altenator below the stock postion? I am looking to do this so i can use the stock dog bone mount and not cut my deck lid

    thanks

I low mounted my alternator. Car isn't running yet but should be in the next couple weeks. I did a little write-up about it awhile ago, but need to update it after everythings done. You can see it at http://www.rustytearracing.com/3400_...Alternator.pdf
Also, the alternator I have is from a 90 Buick Century w/ a 3.3L. HTH

Could you post up a picture of this mounted to the engine? I would like to get an idea of where it is mounting and how the belt routing is going to look

I'm supposed to pick up my belt today. However, I won't get back to the car untill this weekend. I'll try to get some decent pictures but phone camera and confined space (engine is in) aren't in my favor.

So as promised, below is a grainy picture of my routing. I don't think this will work with the stock dobone becuse of where my tensioner sits and I didn't realize I could move it until later. Oh belt is a Goodyear 4050650 in case anyone is curious.

Here's a photo of a 3400 that I & my son dropped into a Fiero last year. The owner wanted the alt. low mounted as well so we snagged a mid 90's 3100 A/C bracket and after doing some mods to get it to fit the bosses the alternator assembly went right on. We had to put a spacer in behind the alt pulley to get the pulley to accurately align with the crank but other than that no issues.

This is definitely the routing I would use if I started over. My routing required creative dog-bone fabrication.

Here's the dogbone that I fab'd together to get it to work with the 3400.
It's made of two different dogbone sections and the 3400 lift hook.
                I cut up a 4 cyl 84 dogbone, a 2.8 dogbone & a 3400 engine lift hook.
I cut the hook into 2 pieces (upper & lower), used the dogbone flange from the 4 cyl & cut the 2.8 cross bar and reshaped the curve in it & welded the pieces together to get what you see here.
                It worked out well.

So you couldn't insall the brackets as they are on the 2.8L?

The heads on the 2.8 are cast iron, a completely different configuration with regards to where the threaded bosses in the heads are located and the overall contour the crossbar has to follow across the heads.
