Well, after closer inspection, the holes in the 75mm TB do not line up with the holes in the plenum. I was looking at the front cover from the '04 Malibu and there is a sensor mounted right beside the crankshaft, behind the dampener. Is this another crank sensor?

Why would there be a 24X sensor on an '04 Malibu LX9? Did I miss something?

If you look at the pics CNCguy posted of both engines, you will notice the VVT plenum bolts are not at the edge of the plenum, where as the non-VVT ones are. You can see in the OP's pic, the mounting bolts are indeed at the edge of the plenum, therefore verifying it is a non-VVT plenum.

Other dead giveaways in the pics are the TB holes are sitting at an angle where the LZs mounting holes are straight across. Another is the EGR valve, the VVT engines don't use one. But the biggest is the thermostat housing. VVT engines have U-flow cooling and the coolant exits the front of the heads and the thermostat is in a housing that bolts to the front of the heads. Definitely an LX9 in the picture.

after looking at the pic again it dose look like a non-vvt 3500 plenum, just the angle of the pic makes the neck look steeper... it was also too early in the morning for me on a saturday (very busy week at work)

Thanks, Guys, for all the input. When I went shopping for the engine complete, I told them the 8th character in the VIN had to be '8'. It was so I was sure that it would be an LX9. Also no actuator in the front cover, no 'V' in the plenum.
While we're at it, what advantage is it to have coolant pass through the TB?

I recalled your post and tried the TB from my '99 Rodeo and correct-o! It's a bolt up. However, a back plate has to be mad to redirect the IAM back into the UIM by slotting the AIM port down to the throttle passage then closing the backside of the TB with the plate. Plate is shaped just like the TB gasket for the '99 Rodeo, just trace the outside of the gasket onto the plate and cut to fit, use a hole saw for the 60mm bore. Note that the mounting hole in the TB are 10mm and the mounting bolts in the 3500 are 8mm and you would need to have bolts at least 50mm long. NAPA has them.
I'm on hold now for $$$ for a cam, timing sensor, etc.

'99 Rodeo would have 3.2 SOHC or DOHC V6, not much incentive to swap there, I've had both.

                        The S-10 2.8L though...

I'm still wanting to stuff a 3x00 in my '90 Isuzu Trooper. Interested to see what you do with the S-10.

                          Hi, Canyonero,
The swap is a LX9 into my '92 Isuzu pickup that has the 'same' engine (I guess) you have in your '90 trooper, a GM 3.1 L V6. That is what came in my P'up but I replaced it with a GM HT3400 at 303K miles. I now hav 696K on the chassis so that's 394K on the crate engine. I already have a '99 Rodeo with the 3.2L DOHC Isuzu engine. The HT 3400 might be an easy swap for the Trooper.
                          Good Luck!

I had a '98 Amigo with the DOHC, pretty fun little thing.

Do you mean to say that you have an aluminum head engine in your P'up?

I do have the 3.4L Camaro block swapped into my Trooper.

So what progress has been made on this? I'm interested in picking up an LX9 for my Trooper. My friend just got a 3.4L swap running in his Trooper, and it's probably going to be better than mine. I need to stay ahead! :P
