    CHANNEL PLATE REASSEMBLY

If replacing the driver's side seal, use caution not to hook the seal puller into the bearing race. Pry the old seal out.

Seat channel plate on a plank of wood and place the new seal into the opening. Cover with a 2x4 scrap and hammer into place.

Clean all gasket material off the channel plate and transmission.

Restack the 4th clutch as follows:
Place the thickest plate over the new 4th hub. Orient the tab with the half-moon cutout at the 10:30/11:00 position and the other 2 tabs will slip into the piston recesses.

Stack a friction plate onto the 4th hub and the notches will hold it into place.

Alternate the remaining steel plate, friction and steel plate on this stack.
Now ensure plastic oil dam and chain scoop are correctly seated in the transmission housing.

Transfer both dowel pins from transmission housing to channel plate if necessary. Place gaskets onto channel plate and pick some screws to help hold the gaskets in place once you line the channel plate up to the transmission.

Use Vasoline or transmission assembly gel to affix 4th hub/drive shaft thrust washer onto the conical guide of the channel plate.

Slip the oil pump shaft into the transmission housing and twist until it seats into place.

As carefully as possible, place channel plate upon transmission housing through the wheel opening. Guide up and into place, If it doesn't seat make sure the manual shift valve is clear of linkages, etc.

Look from many angles to confirm the gaskets did not slip. Bolts will help confirm the holes are properly aligned.

Take up slack with a few bolts and then connect the linkage to the manual valve.

Replace bolts as removed. Consult this torque table:
    • 8mm head -- through pressure switch: 11 ft-lb/16 Nm
    • 13mm head: 18 ft-lb/25 Nm
    • All 8mm & 10 mm heads through valve body: 106 in-lb/12 Nm
    • All 8mm, T-30 Torx & 10mm head bolts for channel plate EXCEPT the 3 longest encircling the drive shaft, 97 in-lb/ 11 Nm
    • The 3 larger bolts at 13:30, 2:00 & 3:30 about the drive shaft -- 18 ft-lb / 25 Nm

With all bolts torqued confirm the solenoids are in place.

If you haven't replaced the TCC/PWN solenoid, do so now before you reinstall the pump.

Carefully align oil pump onto its shaft, twist and rock as required to seat. Torque the two long bolts that affix the base plate to 11 ft-lb/16 Nm and the other 9 bolts to 106 in-lb/12 Nm.

Reinstall the wiring harness & route it so that it cannot be pinched by the cover.

If replacing the lathe cut seal, stick it into place inside the groves of the cover. The grooves are larger than the seal.

I own an 85 6000 STE with the 'W' engine and TH 125 C. I did not see any specific date for the 'W' engine or the TH 125 C. Will I find any information somewhere else?

The following pages contain information on specific transmission models from the 4T60, 4T60E and 4T65 family(4T40/4T45 and 4T80 information may be in the works, stay tuned). For now, it is NOT an all-inclusive list, but any missing information would be appreciated. Miscellania: 4T60E Differentials with an asterisk are "fine pitch" final drives. Sun gears, internal ring gears, and pinion gears are NOT interchangeable with other final drives. 4T65E with "IMS" have the newer type of s...

So you have significantly modded your engine and now your transmission seems to be the weak link of your build. You have a few options to upgrade the stock 4T45E transmission which can be rather costly, or you can swap to the stronger 4T65E series transmission which seems to be uncharted territory for many. The purpose of this article is to provide a little more insight on what it will take to swap a 4T65E transmission into your 99+ N-body. ...

INTRO This is a guide on how to service your transverse automatic transmission without a lift. All work is done with the vehicle on jack stands. Once the cover is removed the valve body is left attached to the channel plate. This assembly can then be moved to a workbench for easier servicing if valve body work is in your plans. In any case the transmission drive chain, pump, 4th gear assembly and many other parts can be repaired or upgraded at this time. In the description below the term "c...
