    PUMP AND CHANNEL PLATE REMOVAL

Two (2) back plate and nine (9) cover plate bolts hold the pump in place. A single silver colored bolt holds the pump cover to the pump back plate. DO NOT remove this bolt until the pump is off the transmission. Then if you wish to disassemble the pump you can remove this one too.

Remove the 1-2 shift solenoid (on the top left) to remove the channel plate bolts behind it.

Disconnect the link from the manual shift valve (top right of valve body.) To do this, raise the finger of the stamped metal keeper and pull the rod away from the valve.

Note that we do not remove all the bolts visible since we do not want to separate the valve body from the channel plate at this time.
Find a sheet of Styrofoam or cardboard to arrange the bolts as they appeared on the channel plate when you removed them. At least 6 different sizes & lengths are in use and it can be very confusing to sort this out later.

Besides the 10mm head bolt behind the 1-2 shift solenoid there is a 8mm head bolt below it and another immediately to the right, between these two bolts.

Along the channel plate bottom is another 8mm head bolt, near where the forward most T-40 Torx bolts go, and another 8mm head bolt at the bottom right corner of the channel plate.

A "circle" of 4 bolts with 10mm heads hold the channel plate around where the drive shaft exits the channel plate, and 1 T-30 Torx bolt as well.

Remove the 8mm head bolt at the top of the pressure switch assembly.

Remove the 13mm head bolt (the only such bolt) near the drive shaft.

Lastly, remove the 3 10mm head bolts along the lower left edge of the channel plate.
The channel plate should now be free. BEWARE:
The manual valve can slide free at any moment.

The oil pump shaft will follow the channel plate out and may drop suddenly to the ground. However, the shaft will only fit correctly one way, if you didn't notice how it was oriented before it came out.

The 4th clutch assembly will stick to the channel plate during removal.

The drive sprocket thrust washer will be inside the 4th hub but not centered correctly anymore.

I own an 85 6000 STE with the 'W' engine and TH 125 C. I did not see any specific date for the 'W' engine or the TH 125 C. Will I find any information somewhere else?

The following pages contain information on specific transmission models from the 4T60, 4T60E and 4T65 family(4T40/4T45 and 4T80 information may be in the works, stay tuned). For now, it is NOT an all-inclusive list, but any missing information would be appreciated. Miscellania: 4T60E Differentials with an asterisk are "fine pitch" final drives. Sun gears, internal ring gears, and pinion gears are NOT interchangeable with other final drives. 4T65E with "IMS" have the newer type of s...

So you have significantly modded your engine and now your transmission seems to be the weak link of your build. You have a few options to upgrade the stock 4T45E transmission which can be rather costly, or you can swap to the stronger 4T65E series transmission which seems to be uncharted territory for many. The purpose of this article is to provide a little more insight on what it will take to swap a 4T65E transmission into your 99+ N-body. ...

INTRO This is a guide on how to service your transverse automatic transmission without a lift. All work is done with the vehicle on jack stands. Once the cover is removed the valve body is left attached to the channel plate. This assembly can then be moved to a workbench for easier servicing if valve body work is in your plans. In any case the transmission drive chain, pump, 4th gear assembly and many other parts can be repaired or upgraded at this time. In the description below the term "c...
