OPENING THE TRANSMISSION
This is what it's all about. Don't strip the Torx bolts!
The lower T-40 bolts are known to be trouble to remove. Thoroughly clean the bolt heads and crevices so the bit can seat fully.
Tapping the bolt head with a chisel around the edges may help beak them free.
An old-style hammer powered impact driver attached to the Torx bit is helpful.
Once the Torx bolts are out, loosen the other bolts several turns but leave in place. An old-style hammer powered impact driver attached to the Torx bit is helpful.
With MUCH care the cover gasket can be reused.
First, confirm the case is free but retained by the loosened bolts.
Remove most of the bolts and carefully back out the others enough to allow play between the case & cover to confirm the gasket is free from the case and cover. The gasket has 3 strip sections and should be supported with 2 hands so it doesn't tear at any junction once free of the transmission.
As carefully as possible remove the gasket and cover through the wheel opening.Remove most of the bolts and carefully back out the others enough to allow play between the case & cover to confirm the gasket is free from the case and cover. You now have access to the wiring harness inside the transmission. Carefully use a screwdriver to raise the tabs enough to unplug the harness connectors. Do not flex the tabs excessively as sometimes the plastic has become brittle.
Most solenoids can be removed by pulling the steel clip from the exposed valve body channel EXCEPT the one for the TCC/PWM solenoid, you must remove the oil pump first for that solenoid.
