Recently I had to remove the front cover on my 1994 3.4 DOHC V6, and
one problem that I had was removing the sprocket that goes for the main
timing belt drive pulley. It was pressed on, but I could not find an
easy way to remove it. Turns out you have to tap it for screws and use
a puller, but more on that later.
What you will need:
1. 7/16 thread tap
2. 2 or 3 7/16 bolts (depending on the puller that you use) that have the same thread pitch as the tap.

Several people have talked about the possibility to use the 3.4 DOHC heads on the 3x00 engines. Some for performance, and some for replacment, where getting a 3.4 DOHC block might be difficult, but getting a 3400 (or even a 3100) block might be easier to come by.

The following pictures and directions should be used as a general guideline and in no way represents every year/modification. See the specifications page for the proper fastener torque specs.
Parts
You will want to replace EVERYTHING when you replace the belt. It costs more now but it will save you time and more money later on.
- Timing belt - 24502982
- Tensioner pulley - 24503561
- Idler pullies - 24503859
- Tensioner actuator - 24503860

The specs for my home made tools = 1/2" x 1/2" x 6" key stock with 5/16" hole in center. Bolts are M8 x 1.25 x 50mm, two washers are needed on each. Sorry about the dark pics, flash was not working for some reason.

91-96 engines use a 35mm lifter, which are available in a lightweight design sold on the 60V6 store here. 97 went to the smaller diameter lifters so there are no options for them that I am aware of other than aftermarket stock replacements.

Having just completed this swap myself and being MORE than impressed with the results, I felt the need to write up how to properly do this swap so everyone else can do it easily.
First off, here are the major components you will need from your donor motor:
- Upper Intake (Plenum)
- Lower Intake and fuel rail
- ’96 Rear Cam Carrier Cover (Valve Cover)
- Intake pipe

Cam options for the 3.4 DOHC are few and far between. You could possibly have Crower or some other company make a solid billet cam set custom for your motor, but thats going to cost anywhere from $1000-2000. The alternative is to have the stock cams reground for a better profile. Lunati will NOT do them, same goes for Crane. A company in California will do them however for around $500. You can contact them on thier website, Cadillac Hotrod Fabricators.
