Thread: Custom roller cam blanks

    Custom roller cam blanks

I'm also getting ready to order a billet CAM blank for my LZ series engine.

Of anyone wants one let me know. I might also be able to make the LX series blanks (I think they are slightly shorter but very similar)

Will you be keeping the VVT?
Have you given any thought to having the blank cut to use the early (3.1?) double roller chain?

Yes to VVT. I think the can gear mount pattern has to match the application.

I can leave them 'blank' so the end user can put what the want on there.

My intention is to produce an 8620 gun drilled billet blank with lobes and journals roughed within 0.020 Tp 0.100" depending on the cam grinders preference. The cam gear will be hobbed as well and possibly be antifriction coated.

Leaving the grinder to rough and the journals and lobes then heat treat and harden and final grind/polish

I'm getting ready to order a cam this week or next.... does anyone need one for a 3500/3900 LZ engine? I need to get at least 5 of them ordered (while the machine is set up).

If anyone wants one or needs them let me know you can request whatever profile you want.

Anyone interested in the blanks? I was hoping to get 5 made to fill a minimum order, however if I have to I'll only get 2 made at an extra cost.

I know these lines Look crooked on paper, but I swear I've got them strait in my head.

blueprints? directions? plans? those are for people who know what they're doing!

I haven't gotten the quotes back on the drawings I sent out. How many are you interested in? I'll hopefully hear back from the company this coming week.

I won't know until I have an idea of cost, I honestly don't know why I bother asking though, I asked about your regrind and got nothing back.

Custom Cams for 60 degree engines aren't cheap. The material (8620 steel) isn't too expensive by itself, but few companies want to mess with making the blanks and then finish grinding and heat treating them without a quantity order.

I'm guessing the quote process could take up to two weeks, especially if the company thinks it will only be for one or two cams at bare minimum cost. One of the companies I talked to told me they could give me a better price if I ordered a few cams from them (not really that surpassing to me).

So, for me the real question is if anyone else is interested in either a blank or finished cam either to spec for 3100/3400 series or for the VVT engines (LX/LZ series). I suspect the price will be somewhere around $500 to $1000 +/- a bit depending on how many I order. Though I'm hoping the price for a larger order will be significantly cheaper. If not, my cam is going to be expensive...

The question I need answered is how many people are seriously interested in a custom cam or cam blank and what kind of dollar amount its worth. If people interested in a cam aren't willing to pay what it cost, then I'll just have one or two made for myself.

When I posted my reground cam I didn't get many offers and only one decent offer prior to deciding no one was that interested in it. So I was curious if a billet/custom cam would generate any more interest since it could be machined to spec....

So I got the quotes back on my VVT cams. $850 each. If anyone is interested let me know. I need to buy a minimum of 3 of them. Please let me know as soon a possible.
