Lost fifth and reverse in 284

At the car wash this afternoon I attempted to back out of the wash bay and the car went forward... so I thought maybe one of the ends on the shift cable had Effed off but is was fine. I then manually put the car in reverse and backed out. Later I put the car in the shop and visually checked the cables and found no issues then proceeded to check the interior end and everything looks and feels good... aside of course from the fact that I can't reach 5th or reverse. hints? tips? suggestions?

There are some RARE instances on these gear boxes where you can jam the lever, but in your case, if you can manually select under the hood, there there has to be something up with the cables, maybe the lever assembly in the vehicle has an issue.

It's gotta be the gate select cable if you can still manually do it.

Is the cable shifter bracket in side car broke? They sometimes crack and when you try to shift over and down or over and up the brokeness of the bracket flexes not allowing the cable to properly extend. Does it grind when trying to shift into those gears?

Have you had someone move the shifter while watching under the hood to verify correct movement? So far I'm with the other guys about the cables and/or the hold down brackets. Like Dave said, if you got it in gear manually with no problems and it won't do it with the shifter then there is surely a problem somewhere between point A and B.

Maybe a shifter cable has separated inside or something and it's not behaving as it should.

so after tearing everything apart I found that the gate cable had separated at the trans mount BUT the soft rubber casing was still attached so it looked as though it was in fine shape.... so now I am looking to find the cables I have a lot of good connections locally for finding parts but there is nothing available so far... tips? leads?
