emission tests

Got a question for all those that go through emission tests. Where I am at it is visual only so I have no experience in the matter.

Is it only a tailpipe test and verify that there are no SES codes, or do they scan the computer to verify that the emissions equipment is operating (such as verifying that the EGR opens when it should)?

What year?? Here in CT if you have OBD1, before 96, they do a tailpipe test with the car on the rollers. With OBD2, 96 and up, they scan the computer.. Don't know about Kansas tho....
