    02 3100 gp-> 3400? and other improvements

    i dont know very much about this subject but plan on learning a lot in the next few months, and im very interested in doing a 3100 to 3500 top swap if it is possible! i have an 02 grand prix se (3100) wondering what i would need to perform a top swap? im not talking about tools im talking about materials... what is actually changed? from the heads to the intake? i assume i should change my springs and lifters if i'm already down their! do i need to tune my pcm as soon as i do the swap or can i just ride around for a bit before getting it tuned? if someone wouldn't mind a detailed list wouldn't hurt im looking for the most pain free way to do it since this would be my first engine rebuild/swap/hybrid

    edit: check out my later posts....

    Unfortunately, since you have a 3100, you can't put the 3500 heads on, as the bore is too small for the head combustion chamber size.

    because not all of us are on the same page.
    1995 Monte Carlo LS 3100, 4T60E, OBD1 Conversion...for now, future plans include a 3900, T04E-46 (Knock-Off) turbo (For the 3100, ~T61 for the 3900), and a F40.

    so what can i go to from a 2002 grand prix 3100? what are my options in terms of improving performance, i do want to keep the same tranny and block since i dont have a ton of money to throw into it! im looking for more bang/buck improvements, like if doing a top swap to a 3400 is only going to net me small improvement but costs a lot then i probably wont bother BUT if better valves/valve springs or an intake manifold (which shouldn't cost much) would net me a decent improvement but still is a little pricey i would happily do that!

    edit: i have a DIY cai and a 3400 throttle body, i plan on doing some "performance" injectors just because they will cost about the same as replacing my stock ones and the stock ones are getting pretty old now (>120000 miles right now)

    You will have to tune for larger injectors. Your 2002 has the best parts stock, short of the block bore size to allow you an easy upgrade to the 3500 heads. If you bore the block .060, then the 3500 heads will work on your block. Port work is your only upgrade option for heads and manifolds. The 3400 top end is identical to what you have now that you have the 56mm TB on there.

    You will probably need to get CARB certified headers I imagine. No idea on the u-bend, especially since it's part of the exhaust system. I imagine they will never notice that, but the headers they will notice for sure on inspection. Maybe you should head to an inspection station and ask them what kind of limits you can work in as far as parts and such and go from there. Springs would be fine though. They can't see them, they can't tell they aren't stock, they won't pick them up on emissions testing.

    nice so i shouldnt have to worry about u bend delete, valve springs, any benefit of changing out lifters or valves if i dont change out the cam? i know changing out the cam is "illegal" so i dont want to do that

    edit: what should i do? i want to do the most bang/buck things i can... i assume valve springs are a pretty cheap one (since ill be doing the labor myself) i know i should also do the u-bend delete and a tune
