    Gm Tech 1 scan tool

    Sorry for the lame question but here it is
    I am looking to buy the cheapest scanner for the job
    WILL THE "Equus 3120 Innova Diagnostic Code Scanner with Freeze Frame Data for OBDI and OBDII Vehicles." preform the " iac idle learn?" (ECM memory to be updated with the correct IAC valve pintle position)
    i just installed a new EPROM and IGN control mod. and coil packs in my
    1993 3.1 RS cavalier..
    the manual states the use of a GM tech1 scanner.. I am looking to buy the cheapest scanner for the job..

    not likely...

    there's a pretty good chance you won't need a Tech1 either, just drive in various situations for a good 10 minutes at least and at the end of the drive, instead of going into park and shutting down, just leave the shifter in Drive and hold the brake for ~60 seconds or so, then go on with the shutdown, since that will allow for time to let the IAC learn it's minimum position. if a manual trans, obviously, no "drive" position, but hold your foot on the brake.
    1995 Monte Carlo LS 3100, 4T60E, OBD1 Conversion...for now, future plans include a 3900, T04E-46 (Knock-Off) turbo (For the 3100, ~T61 for the 3900), and a F40.

    freescan and an ALDL cable can do an IAC reset, but there really is no need for it. Disconnect the battery. Connect the battery. Key on 5 sec. key off 5 sec. Key on 5 sec. Start car. That should do it. If not, it will learn over time, or the IAC is bad, or the passage is clogged.

    ^^ This. As many chips the 91 and 92 went through while tuning, this way has never failed.

    I do it slightly different, but it works as well.

    disconnect the battery for a few minutes, hook it up and start the car. it should stall in a few seconds if not shut it off. Wait a few seconds then start it back up. It should idle up fairly high then will return to normal. Then go drive around for a while.

    If that doesn't work then Freescan can do it like Ben said but you'll need an ALDL cable.

    All seemed well at first but after 4 minutes of driving the car started cutting in and out then the check engine light
    started to blink.so i shut it down and after a few minutes started the car and 4 minutes later the car did the same stuff all over again..Guess ill be ordering the ALDL cable....

    If you want to do an Idle Learn use the Tech-1 OR you can do this.
    Disconnect teh battery for a few minutes. (You can disconnect the Pos cable and tough the pos cable to the neg, this deains the caps in the ECM.) Then start it up. Allow the engine to warm up to around 90C ECT. At that time, pleace the Auto trans in Drive (leave a manual in N) and allow the cooling fans to run. When the fan, or fans, cycle OFF the IAC will have written the nec calibration to RAM. Idle Learn is complete. Shut it off or drive away. The ECM will not learn it base IAC position with vehicle speed and it will not learn if ANY serail data Mode 4 command has been sent before the learn. Hope this helps.

    i've been messing with the A1 mode4 stuff a bit, and you can instantly force a new IAC minimum to be learned, assuming you know what you want it to be.

    however, if you do know what value works for your specific vehicle, and can write PROMs, it's easier just to change the default IAC minimum value that gets used after a NVRAM failure.
