3.4 Complete overhaul.

My engine is ticking, and I'm about to tear it apart... more then likely on my spare time here this week. I'm afraid that I'm going to go overboard on this project... but we'll see. I have a hard time with restraint.

First some background. I own a race engine shop here in the Sacramento area (hiperfmachine.com), so designing the short block and porting the heads is no issue at all. I'm basically unlimited in resources.

How-ever, if I could get some leads on what works the best, that would help make this build as simple as possible.

First thing is simple. Do people have a proven cam grind for the stock lobes, and what cam cores I can use for making a custom grind? If any-one has a full set of specs off of some custom cams, it would save me a bunch of time.

How-ever, I'm not sure if I want to go with Turbo or Nitrous set up. Personally, I'm a huge fan of nitrous and run it on my vette. I love not having the power every second... only when I need it.

Should I switch to ODB II? I'm getting a strong feeling that we should lean on a big YES for that... If so, what cars should I look to rape for a ODB II system.. 96, 97 Z34's?

Plan on porting the heads, and so on... Does any-one have resources on springs, or SS valves?

The engine has already been bored 5mm over... is this block safe to go 10mm over?

Anyway, more questions to come. I will post progress of the tear down when it starts.

-Kyle

I'm interested in seeing your progress. I think the heads flow great already and would be more concerned with beefing up the bottom end and figuring out which ARP studs would work to clamp down the heads. I think this engine has tons of potential for a turbo. Matt Hawkins at Pennocks is making 380 hp on his basically stock engine, so much more should be possible if done right.

There is MANY things that can be done to this engine, the biggest factor is that because most things have to be made or done custom, it comes down to money.

Even with all that I have done there is WAY MORE that I can do and I'm very happy with the engine at this point. IF I had more time I would be interested in starting to have some performance parts made in small quantities.

I did find out though, that lots of power IS locked away in the heads. I FULLY port and polished, AND port matched my heads, LIM, UIM, and exhaust manifolds. I was VERY impressed with the results.

for your valve spring set-up ive heard and read something on using LS6 valve springs. another word of mouth im hearing is 13* retarded for the exhaust cams and 7* for the intake. havent tested them out yet but soon as i am rounding up all my parts before i start.

5 mm over is a lot.. If I remember correctly, some older references recommended 50-60 thousandths of an inch as the maximum overbore.

97 Z34 engine management works with HP Tuners. 96 and 97 are supported by DHP. I have considered trying the L67 programming to run the DOHC, but I want to try the 96-97 files first. The 96 will run a 4T60E transmission. The 97 PCM is setup for a 4T65E.

I prefer turbos on the DOHC with a large exhaust system and large turbine. For quick power at all RPM, some have tried the GT30R series of turbos. There are LQ1's with over 400 whp on those small turbos. Aaron is trying the GT35R with good results. The Fiero guys have the most experience with boosting the 3.4 DOHC, although there are a few of us on here who have done it in w-bodies. I'm currently running a T04E with a 60 trim compressor and a P trim turbine. I have a ball bearing T67 waiting to go on after I rebuild the motor.

If you have any questions, please ask and we'll help where we can. Realfierotech can also be a good source of info, but that's assuming that you can get registered over there. I've tried multiple times and never get a confirmation e-mail.

AWD swaps are theoretically possible if you find an old Pontiac 6000. There may be a newer GM vehicle which will work. I would bet that anything AWD would require lots of fabrication and very little would be bolt on.

Use a 97z34 pcm and you can run a 4T65awd. You can use a 2001 Pontac Aztec AWD Versatrak or rendezvous tranny with out changing the valve body's. Any year after that and you would need to swap a 97-01 valve body in. Fabing the rear up using the parts from a aztec wouldn't be to bad just cost alot.
