Need to fix a collapsed lifter
Hey guys I have been having a problem with my 3400, one of the lifters on it has collapsed, still runs ok when it warms up but it has been going on for about 10k miles and its really getting bad. I was trying to find my chiltons with no luck. I was thinking of taking it to a shop but then dont they have to tear the heads off and put on a new $400 head gasket? The current hg only has about 8k miles or so. I have been running higher viscosity oil to slow the breakdown process, but need to get this thing fixed before my engine takes a dump on me. So does anyone know around abouts what it would cost to have a shop do it?

the heads can stay on. It's the intake manifolds that need removal. Who diagnosed it as a bad lifter? A typical lower intake gasket job is around $600 depending on where you are, plus add for R&R'ing a lifter or 12.

well the lifter came from a 5mm socket that mysteriously found its way into one of my cylinders. the socket broke up into 4 pieces, and im guessing they were getting pinched between the valve, keeping it from closing completely, then the lifter being hammerd by the pushrod. the shop that found the socket didnt fix the lifter at the time because they thought the parts rattling around was all the noise. and a few thousand miles later its still there. taps along pretty hard when cold. after it gets to temp and revved up a few its not as loud but still taps. i can get a vid if u want one. and intake mani gaskets are a must replace for this project? couldnt i just trace and cut one from cork roll?

Did the shop that retrieved the socket check the valve? The gaskets are thick plastic (and the new fel-pros are metal/rubber, they're rather robust) no way you'd get away with making a cork one.

juss buy a gasket its like 50$ anf then there is no shit to worrie about.. and i would be worried about the hot spots created on the valve seat that happend when it stuck open... that is askin for a burnt valve and loss of comp. in one cyl. rite there.

I I bought a COMPLETE head set, which includes head gaskets, upper and lower intake, valve seals, and exhaust manifold gaskets on ebay for my 3100 for $71 shipping and everything. I could get you the place where I got them from & see if they have them. This set for my 3100 was like $260 some odd bucks but found it there for $71 shipping included.
