2001 chevy Lumina ?'s

My son had a 1997 lumina with 175,000 miles for a very short time then we traded it in for a 2001 lumina with 81,000 miles on it. It looks and drives great but on cold start up it has lifter rattle or something like that until it warms up then it gets a lot quieter but it never goes completely away. The oil and antifreeze look great and there are no signs of a leaky intake{I know the 3100 has intake gasket problems} The engine is very clean. Is this normal for this engine. I've heard from a few friends that it was but I'd rather hear it from you guy's. Thanks in advance.

Mark.
