The golden valvecover

What is the deal with some 2.8s and even some 3.1s having a goldish valve cover?

Like this pace car.

My 1989 Corsica had one as well as my 1988 Regal. Is there a serious meaning behind them? They seem to be completely random.

it's not quite that dark but my 3.1 in my 91 and the 3.1 that came in my current car both had tan colored painted valve covers..... here's a pic after i cleaned all the sludge off the motor and put my polished UIM on my current car...

I've seen the light tan on a bunch of genII front rocker covers. I haven't paid attention to any pattern, but it seemed that the later genII 3.1s were more likely to have this, I.E. '92 and later. I've mostly seen this in the W-bodies as well.

That's odd. I've never seen one like that and I've seen a few thousand 2.8/3.1 engines over the past few years(my junkyards bring in a ton of cars with them, and rotate them out often).

my 89Z24's 2.8 was that brown color. It's a textured paint as well.. so when you remove it the cover is almost smooth underneath. Very good base for polishing a set.
